Carson had a blast except for the big life jacket he had to wear on the boat he was not such a big fan of that.. But he got a lot of attention and loved the fact that he got to be outside alot playing with the "doggies" (briana's dog lenny came and their was also gregg's brother's dog their as well)

My School and career update :)

Well I just finished my first Module (first two courses) in Hope International University's masters in education/ teacher credential program. It feels good to have that under my belt. I am now in two new courses that start today these two are both online. :( I am not too excited about that- In the online courses we are required to post an introduction the first day of class, and the professor of one of my courses wanted to know our academic background, I probably included too much detail but I thought I would share it because I don't think many of you know,or are aware that I have not stopped taking course except for the (one semester carson was born) since I graduated college in 2006...

I graduated from HIU in 2006 with my bachelors in Children's Ministry. After graduating from HIU, I spent a semester getting perquisites taken for the CSUF credential program (completed 10 units), I had Carson the following February (2/17/2007) so I decided to enroll in CAL State teach instead of the traditional CSUF (Californian State University of Fullerton) credential program for the flexibility.I had to pull out of that program luckily before class "officially" began and send my books back because I had to move back to live in WA state with my family for a time and while living there I enrolled in Grand Canyon University's online masters in Elementary Education with eligibility for a teaching credential program. I chose this program because it was entirely online and I was in between Washington and California a lot at the time and not sure where I was going to be living full time. I completed 12 units there and realized the program was definitely catered to people currently teaching (which I was not) and I couldn't handle a completely online program and their credential was not recognized by California's department of Education... so this Fall 2008 I transferred to HIU (only one class of the four I had completed transferred) to complete my credential and masters at a school I knew was accredited and where I could receive quality education that was not all online. I am ready and motivated to finally get this credential already!!

There is some good to having to repeat very similar classes, first of all I have completed all my California Teacher Tests.. Cbest, CSET's etc. I know the info really well so my new classes aren't so difficult. I have my TB shot, fingerprinting, cpr/first aid certification...

But It is really annoying to me that I should be done with school and have a teaching credential if I stayed on track.. but that's just life, I guess you have to roll with the punches :)... Well actually I did stay on track just got on some wrong tracks that the California department of Education did not approve of.

I am working right now part time for brian's brother in law at EMC Design
you can see his web site at:
http://emcdesignca.com/
He own's his own graphic design company and I am his executive assistant. Brian's Dad watches Carson for me on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I Can do that. Currently I am applying to Substitute teach so I can get some teaching experience in both the private and public schools to see what I like better and get a feel for different grades. Plus the teaching jobs are so scarce right now the only way to get in is to have principles know you from subbing at their schools.

Anyways I just thought I would give an update of what I am doing for school (and what I have been doing!) and work because I am always posting about what and where me and Carson have been but I forget to fill you in on my student/work life :)

Busy Busy Busy October!

This October has been so busy every weekend (and every day really) there is something on the calendar.

I got Carson his first pet. A fish. Carson loves it. He feeds it every morning and says, "hi fish" and then when he is done feeding and looking at the fish he says, "bye fish" and waves goodbye.

I found out that beta fish can go a few days with out eating and are pretty durable and low maintenance so I said that the perfect fish for us.

Karyss came to visit last weekend and we celebrated her birthday and her Pregnancy! She just found out she is Pregnant and is due May 30th. I am so excited for her and I cant wait to see her through each stage of pregnancy like she saw me.

Sunday October 5th Brian, John, Carson and I attended the Buchholz Family Reunion. It was my first time meeting my cousin Heather's baby Ethan. He is a few months younger than Carson and so cute! Carson and Ethan sat on my lap as I read them an Elmo book. Grandpa Cecil had fun with his great grandsons. It was neat to see all the people that I am related to.

IN this Photo: Grandpa Cecils kids and their kids and their kids, kids. four generations!

can the FDA be trusted?

I read a book a few months ago titled skinny Bitch It was pretty much a book about vegan ism and throughout this book facts were given on the shady way the FDA approved things like aspartame that have been proven to be unhealthy and unsafe in lab testings. THe FDA is also approving large amounts of hormones that go into our foods that is causing girls to begin their periods as early as age 7.

"Pollutants are a serious problem. Plastics and insecticides can break down into chemicals similar to estrogen. This is thought cause hermaphroditic fish. Ivelisse Colón of the University of Puerto Rico identified a compelling connection between exposure to chemicals called phthalates and a large increase in breast development among Puerto Rican girls younger than 7."
discovering this truth began my skepticism of our FDA and the way in which stuff gets approved to be "okay" to sell in this country. It truly makes me wonder if the best interest of the American people are at the heart of their decisions or if it is Fast Cheap production that is able to be attained when they turn their head on the potential dangers of the way food and drugs are processed.

On the news this morning I heard again that cold medicines are not safe for children under the age of 6! Yet they remain on the shelves because the FDA fears that if they weren't there parents may justify giving a small amount of Adult cold medicine to their child, which would be a lot worse then giving their sick child - child cold medicine. Studies have shown that not only is cold medicine not recommended for children under the age of 6 but it is also ineffective. I believe that the FDA should give more credit to parents. If we saw a warning on our cold medicines that warned against the DANGER of giving the medicine to a child under the age of 6 then of course we would not give that to our child!

As I looked into this issue a bit more I read the following quotes on a few other blogs...
“Our citizens can no longer trust that their food, drugs or medical devices are safe when the FDA says they are,” Dingell, a Michigan Democrat, said at a hearing on the recent spate of deaths tied to contaminated heparin, the WSJ reports.

"One can question what their effectiveness is in older children and even adults," Shannon said. "Across all ages, the scientific evidence for their effectiveness is very weak and, for children under 6, the data are clear that they don't work."

It is very sad the cycle the FDA creates by approving foods and medicines that are unsafe and or unhealthy for our children. They approve food and drugs to mass market and make money and seemed to be more concerned with that fast production and unconcerned about our rising obesity rates, accidental drug overdose deaths, autism on the rise, Diabetes , and all around unhealthy Americans.

I don't mean to be such a skeptic, but my eye brow is definitely raised and my guard is up. I will be checking labels more carefully and checking with Carson's pediatricians recommendations before giving him unsafe/unhealthy food and medicine.

In a perfect world the FDA would only approve what is the best for our kids and American people. The labels should say exactly what will happen when you consume the product. Like: Consumption of this product will lead to Type II Diabetes, high blood pressure, and clogged arteries possible heart attack.

Maybe this would change the consumption of over processed high in fat foods, or the consumption of unsafe medicines. Also maybe if more people (with the governments help) learned how to eat healthy and exercise then their would be less sick people.

But the government decided not to include mandatory Physical Education in the "No Child Left Behind Act" but that is an another subject you don't want me to get started on. :)
